24/7 access to hook-up apps, sexual imagery, or sex-drug linked behaviours can stretch our self-control capacities like never before.
Sexual urges, thoughts & behaviours may be a solution to life’s struggles. They may be a way of self-soothing, of regulating emotions, of addressing relationship patterns, or as a result of erotic, moral, or religious conflicts.
Whatever the function, if your sexual urges, thoughts & behaviours feel out of control, then it’s a problem. If the consequences of these behaviours stop you living your best life possible, then it’s a problem.
What does it matter what you call it?
The label sex & porn addiction is controversial. It is not an actual diagnosis, it's not supported by science, it perpetuates socio-cultural sex negativity, it can feel shaming, and it assumes a lack of responsibility and accountability for behaviours. For some, self-identifying as a sex or porn addict likely increases pain and suffering over time. Despite this, society, as well as some therapists, continue to label what is often consensual variations of healthy sexual health, self-identity & well-being as an illness.
What you call it determines how you help. It determines what treatment to use. I believe the name couldn't be more important. I do not work within the sex addiction model, but rather a non-pathologizing, sex-positive, evidence-based approach based on the science of human sexuality, within an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) framework.
My aim is to help you better understand your relationship with sex & porn, and to find a self-felt vision of sexual health that you feel good about.

GSRD outside of the perceived standards of heteronormative & cisnormative society, are frequently viewed as abnormal, broken or unhealthy. This can bring a felt-sense of stress, shame, and internalised negativity. I have lived & worked in GSRD | kink communities in Toronto, London & Brighton for over 30 years and welcome diversity. As a skilled specialist sexual health practitioner, I also offer discussion on sexually transmitted infections, PEP, PrEP & support to those newly diagnosed with HIV and their partners.
The BDSM Test is a fun and educational test to determine what kind of kinkster you are. Founded in 2014, its main mission is to make a simple, accessible test to help beginning kinksters determine which labels are or aren't suitable for them; and to be a fun experience for everyone taking it, beginners, and experts alike.
